All You Need To Know About PRBS Generators

A Pseudorandom Binary Sequence (PRBS) is one of the most important sequences ever generated. This binary pattern is commonly generated by a special pulse pattern generator called the PRBS generator, which find applications in telecommunication, correlation technique and encryption, etc..

Here’s what the sequence is and why it matters more than you think.

The Pseudo Random Binary Sequence:

As its name suggests, A PRBS is a simple binary sequence that appears to be random. Even though the sequence appears to be random, it is generated by a definite computer algorithm. This algorithm is quite complex, which makes the output of the PRBS very difficult to predict. As a result, the signal generated is statistically similar to a completely random binary sequence.

Believe it or not, the PRBS is not a new term. Research on the design and application of this binary sequence first began in the 1960s. As these signals have a specified length, they can easily be generated with shift register circuitry. All one needs to do is to connect the circuitry to the appropriate feedback, which result in the generation of this incredibly useful binary sequence.

Applications of the PRBS Generator:

The PRBS generator is an extremely useful sequence that finds uses in multiple fields of engineering and testing, such as:

1. System Identification:

Historically, engineers used the PRBS generator for the purpose of system identification. For those of you who don’t know, system identification is a domain of modeling that can help simulate systems from experimental data.

Unlike mathematical modeling, which takes an analytical approach, system identification makes use of PRBS generators for an experimental approach. A series of predetermined tests are performed on the system and its response to each test is noted. An experimental model is drafted that perfectly satisfies the properties of the system which allows us to develop a better understanding of the system.

In the case of complex signals, the mathematical model simply cannot be used as it requires numerous calculations. In these cases, engineers and analysts make use of PRBS generators to develop an experimental approach.

2. Fiber Optic Applications

PRBS generators are commonly used for testing fiber optic technology. Engineers have used them to check the performance of MEMS gyroscopes (commonly used by our smartphones to stabilize the camera), laser gyroscopes and IFOGs.

In recent research studies published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) that has discussed the effects of PRBS modulation on Fiber Optic Gyroscopes; although the proposed designs are in their infancy, they show huge potential which means the door is open for future research and development.

All in all, the Pseudo Random Binary Sequence is a very useful and commonly used binary sequence. This makes the PRBS generator one of the most important signal generators ever developed. If you ever find yourself in the market for PRBS generators, we at ADSANTEC would love to help.
